Dear Bergos Next community,
It’s November and the weather is getting uncomfortable, the leaves on the trees are thinning out and fondue and raclette season is starting once again in Zurich. Personally, I’m a big fan of this time of the year, as it gives us the opportunity to work on projects and discuss topics that we simply wouldn’t make time for in the summer. When the weather is bad, the cozy office or warm dry gym are out of a sudden more tempting than they were back in August. With this in mind, we have spent the last few weeks working quite vigorously on the future direction of Bergos Next and have come up with some – in my opinion – important and interesting thoughts that I would like to present to you in this issue.
Are we reaching you well?
We have repeatedly revised our concept for Next Month and so it will not have escaped your attention that we have recently been working primarily with a web version instead of a PDF version. We did this to make it even easier for you to share and link to articles in the future – but also to improve the reading experience, especially on your mobile devices. Do you have any feedback on our website or our new newsletter? Be sure to let us know! Our Communications team is looking forward to your opinions.
How can we offer you the best content?
Our Next team is always working to find the latest trends for you and keep you up to date. It is necessary for us to take enough time to put together our Next Month. This can sometimes be challenging, especially around the turn of the month, which is why we have decided to publish our newsletter in the middle of the month from now on.
How much time do you want to take?
We have experimented with articles of different lengths over the last few issues, and this issue is no exception. In general, we have set ourselves the goal of being shorter. The author of each article is always very happy to receive feedback on the content – but also on the length! Feel free to contact my colleagues, they will be happy to get in touch with you!
I hope you enjoy the latest edition of our Next Month – and soon a fondue or two!
All the best,
Dennis

WHAT IS THEMATIC INVESTING?
New long-term trends are transforming the global economy. Thematic investing is about finding companies that are set to benefit from a global structural change backed by the Megatrends, which we believe will drive outperformance compared to global equities in the long-run. Moreover, thematic investing seeks to align asset selection with certain economic, political, and social themes prevalent in modern society. In order to represent a long-term component in the portfolio, we seek to capture the arising opportunities across sectors and geographies.

DATA TECHNOLOGIES ENABLE PRODUCTIVITY
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems already greatly impact our lives. The scale, depth and speed of change posed by AI advancements combined with the level of macroeconomic, sector-specific and stock specific AI debates remain incredibly high. This has accelerated, in particular, with the roll-out of ChatGPT. The combination of more advanced semiconductor technologies, more pervasive and faster networks, and significant expansion of cloud-based data centers enables a new wave of data technologies.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are about to revolutionize everything and already greatly impacts our lives. It refers to machines’ mimicking capabilities of human brain, such as learning and problem-solving. Since the early days of the AI-history, some computer scientists have strived to make machines as intelligent as humans. Since its inception in 1950s, AI has come a long way. Based on the recent advancements and the significant increases in investment, we should expect AI technology to become even more powerful in the years and decades to come. Read more here
AI IS THE BRAIN OF THE ROBOT
The word robot is derived from the Slavic word robota, which means work/job. The field of robotics develops machines that can automate tasks and do various jobs that a human might not be able to do. Robots can operate in many situations, for many purposes, and are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Nowadays, commercial and industrial robots are widespread, performing a variety of tasks, especially tasks which are dirty, dangerous or monotonous. However, fully autonomous robots did not appear prior the second half of the 20th century. Read more here
