Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz
Jean-Michel Basquiat. Engadin
14 December 2024 – 29 March 2025

A unique opportunity to discover works from the early 1980s by the legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960 – 1988), which were created exclusively in the Engadin — thanks to his gallerist at the time, Bruno Bischofberger — and are now returning to their place of origin. This fascinating fusion of NYC street art and alpine culture showcase Basquiat’s unique style at its most radical. The “enfant terrible” of the art world blends his signature iconography directly onto the canvas — a pine tree meets a chamois, and words like “Bratwurst” merge with skiers and alpine slopes. It’s a powerful and humorous dialogue between urban graffiti and traditional alpine aesthetics, showing Basquiat in all his creative radicalism.

Galerie Carsten Greve
WOLS
21 December 2024 – 22 March 2025

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Galerie Carsten Greve presents a retrospective of the extraordinary artist WOLS (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, 1913 – 1951). The name “WOLS” – a telegraph error – became synonymous with the Informel and Tachisme movements. Under the title “Circus Wols”, the artist created a captivating body of work, including paintings, drawings, and photographs, depicting the transition from abstraction to radical freedom in art. A master of transformation, WOLS processed his wartime trauma through chaotic, almost spiritual images that never directly addressed the complications of life but rather embodied them through his striking, abstract works.

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac
Hans Josephson. Sculptures 1969 – 1998
21 December 2024 – 1 March 2025

At Thaddaeus Ropac St. Moritz, discover the impressive works of Hans Josephson (1920 – 2020), one of Switzerland’s most prominent sculptors of the 20th century. Josephson’s art represents a powerful, almost archaic confrontation with the human body. His sculptures, made of plaster and cast in bronze or brass, are raw and tactile, with surfaces that exude a timeless presence. Despite their simplicity, they reveal a fascinating fragility—a subtle balance between monumentality and delicacy. The abstract figures, whether sitting, standing, or reclining, are more than just bodies – they are manifestations of the human condition, both timeless and utterly contemporary.

Muzeum Susch
Ilona Keserü: Flow
13 December 2024 – 26 October 2025

At the Muzeum Susch, a private museum founded by Polish entrepreneur Grażyna Kulczyk, tradition meets innovation in the retrospective ‘Ilona Keserü: Flow’. The exhibition honours the 91-year-old artist, who has been shaping abstract art with bold colours and unique techniques for over 70 years. Keserü’s iconic wave and tangle motifs combine Hungarian folk culture with baroque architecture, but her works are never devoid of the human form: Her vibrant, undulating forms evoke faces, hips, and people in motion. A pioneer in the use of sewing as an artistic medium, Keserü has revolutionised textile reliefs, with her images often embossed or stitched to create an almost three-dimensional quality. Her pioneering colour research, mixing skin tones with the shades of the rainbow, results in works that follow an unusual and incredibly fresh canon of colour that is still fashionable today. After decades of being overlooked, Keserü is finally receiving the recognition she deserves, with a focus on the tactile presence of her works.
